Tambittu

Happy Nagara Chauti + Nagapanchami...
Nag Panchami ( नाग पंचमी) is a festival celebrated on fifth day of Shukla Paksha (waxing phase) of Hindu calendar month of Shravan Mas.  During which Hindus  in some parts of  INDIA worship live King Cobras  or images of them. Traditionally, married young women visit their premarital households to celebrate the festival. Especially in villages, an aspect of the celebration involves women swinging on swings hung on tree branches.

Tambittu is a sweet offering made during Nagpanchami festival. It is in cylindrical shape.

Ingradients-
Roasted gram (puthane, hurigadale, split dalia) -2-cups
Grated dry coconut (copra) – 1/ cup tbsp
Ghee- ½ cup
Cardamom pd- 1 tsp
Roasted Peanut pd- ½ cup
Roasted til (Sesame seeds) - 4 tsp
Roasted khaskhas (Poppy seeds) -1 tsp
Gud (Jaggery)  - 2  cups  (more or less according to taste)

 Method-

1.      Put the roasted gram / puthane in a grinder and grind to make a coarse powder.
2.      Put the roasted peanut n make coarse powder.
3.      Heat a thick bottomed pan. Put ghee.
4.      Now add ¼ cup water and jaggery. Heat on medium flame.
5.      When jaggery is dissolved, take off flame and strain through tea strainer to remove any impurities.
6.       Put the jaggery syrup back in the pan and heat again on low flame for 2 mins.
7.      Mix all dry ingredients properly.
8.      Add in syrup &  stir well.

9.       The mixture will start to thicken immediately. Remove from fire and let cool a little.
While the mixture is still warm, make Tambittus (balls) by dipping your hands in water.
The mixture dries fast. If so add little milk. The mixture becomes dryish as it cools. So you need to be fast in making balls / laddoos. These tambittu laddoos are not made a perfect round. They are cylindrical in shape. That is a speciality of Tambittu specially made for Nagapanchami festival.
